As a long-time resident of the Pensacola Area, Richard grew up fishing Pensacola Bay, Santa Rosa Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. There was a natural progression of his fishing from heavy spin fishing to light tackle spin and finally fly fishing. Fly fishing became more than an itch as Richard bounced between a career in environmental consulting to the retail game of fly gear. Several moves around the US gave him knowledge of fly fishing not just saltwater but fishing blue ribbon streams in California and Pennsylvania. He has hosted trips to Christmas Island, Belize, Mexico and the Bahamas.
While managing a fly shop in San Francisco he was exposed to some of the greats in the development of the original FFF from whom he was able to hone his casting and learn teaching techniques. From there he became a licensed charter captain/guide in the Pensacola region and a Certified Casting Instructor. He is a member of the Fly Fishers of Northwest Florida where he is the Casting Director and holds open lessons during the clubs monthly Saturday Clinics. For him nothing is more enjoyable than watching a first timer to fly fishing catch their first on a fly.
